Ann Ragnhild celebrated her 50th birthday at Gulla on July 16. More than 40 guests joined the party, which included port wine, barbecuing and lots of irrestible cakes.

12.8 kg salmon in Gullaspollen

Knut Rasmussen caught this 12.8 kg salmon in Gullaspollen in week 24. So far the fishing in Surna has been very good.

Vårsøghelga at Gulla

As part of Vårsøghelga festival, there was a concert at Gulla Gaard on June 12. Pianist Trygve Brøske and violin player Anders Larsen started out in the living room with chamber music, before opera singer Lina Johnson joined in for the last part of the inside concert. More than 200 guests showed up for a truly magnificent concert.

After the concert Jon Gulla gave a small speech on the history of Gulla Gaard, while Surnadal hotel served port and salmon to the guests. The outside part of the concert was given by Eistein Bæverfjord and Jon Faukstad on the accordion.

In 2010 Jon Atle Gulla published a book, Laks og portvin på Gulla Gaard, that was later awarded a prize by Surnadal heimbygdlag. Trygve Roaldset handed over diploma and flowers to Jon Atle Gulla right after the concert.

Bernt Gulla's 80th birthday at Gulla

There are few people in Nordmøre that have done more for men's fashion and clothing than Bernt Gulla from Kristiansund. With clothing stores in Kristiansund, Sunndalsøra and Oppdal his company defined male elegance in Nordmøre and helped the men look their best. Bernt has now retired from his business, but he is still going strong and celebrated his 80th birthday in 2011.

On May 20 Bernt invited 26 guests to Gulla Gaard as part of his birthday celebration. Whereas Anders Larsen from TrondheimSolistene played the violin, Bjørg Hendseth prepared an outstanding meal with salmon, lamb and ice cream with wild berries. The owner of Gulla Gaard dressed up as "The Don" to commemorate the old days, when Mr. Fleetwood Sandeman, partner of the Sandeman portwine company, used the farm as his own little fishing eldorado.

House ready for the summer

After some intense work during the spring months, we are now ready to receive guests for the summer. We have refurnished the living room with old furniture that was part of the old Gulla Gaard and sold from the farm in 2002. We have also completed a deck in front of the house, where people can relax after long days fishing in the river or hiking in the mountains.

Gulla Gaard is open for guests for two weeks in 2011:

Week 23: 6-12 June

Week 32: 8-14 August

Gulla can receive up to 7 guests. The Sandeman room has two separate beds and its own bathroom. The Matheson room has two separate beds and its own bathroom. The Nilsen suite includes two rooms with a total of 3 beds, also with its own bathroom.

All-inclusive packages include fishing in two of the best pools in Surna (Galthølen and Gullaspollen), accommodation and all meals. Pools are in walking distance from Gulla. Traditional cuisine with local ingredients.

Whereas week 23 is excellent for salmon fishing, week 32 is suitable for both salmon and trout. Fly fishing is very good in both pools. Sunday June 12 there will be an outside concert at Gulla.

Billiard at Gulla

There used to be a dedicated billiard room at Gulla until the fire at the end of the Second World War. The billiard table is now back, and a new billiard room will be ready in June 2011.

Finally, the last room of the house is completed. For the summer of 2011 we have a dining room for 16 people available.

Salmon in Gullaspollen

Troels Hammer caught a 7.0 kg salmon in Gullaspollen on 17 July. It was a hot sunny day and the river was low, but Troels took full advantage of his specially designed fly.

Later the same evening he landede at 5.0 kg salmon that was released into the river.

A new road from Gulla Gaard down to the river has been constructed. We have also removed numerous trees to make it easier to fish along the river.

Morten Harangen published an article about Gulla Gaard in the Flyfishers Journal, Winter 2008. Copies of this article can be obtained from the Flyfishers' Club, 69 Brook Street, London W1K 4ER. This was the first English presentation of Gulla since Abel Chapman's book from 1897.

Summer of 2009

It has been an interesting summer. The restoration of the main house is more or less completed, and the garden finally looks like a garden. We had our first guests at Gulla in August, 44 years after the last guests left the farm. Our neighbor, Bjørg, did a magnificent job as cook and waitor. I think we are all very pleased with the results.

3 August 2009 at 11.30: A sea trout is hooked and landed in Galthølen pool. Another trout was caught later the same night, and a huge 2.5 kg sea trout was landed the night after.

Book about Gulla Gaard released

Portvin og laks på Gulla Gaard (Port and Salmon at Gulla Gaard) was released last week. The book can be bought at local bookstores or directly from me. It is about 190 pages and includes 101 pictures from the 1890s till today.

Furniture from Residence Hotel, Trondheim

These days have been hectic. After realizing that Residence Hotel in Trondheim is closing down, I managed to buy some of their furniture. Now we have beds, tables, chairs, wardrobes, lamps,... all matching and in a style that fits the atmosphere at Gulla. I can't believe how lucky we have been.

If we could only buy their guests as well.

Old guesthouse demolished

The old guesthouse was finally demolished. This is where most of the guests - including King Haakon VII - stayed at Gulla. It was also the oldest house left at the farm, with some parts more than 200 years old. It was completed by Captain Matheson in the mid 19th century, though Fleetwood Sandeman built an additional veranda in the 1880s.

Book manuscript ready

"Portvin og laks på Gulla Gaard" manuscript completed. The material is sent to the printing company today, and the book should be available in mid June.

The book explains how this little farm in Surnadal was bought by British anglers and ended up as an internationally famous fishing lodge. I have included around 100 pictures from the late 19th century till today. Let us hope that someone is interested in reading it.

Gulla Gaard is an old fishing lodge on the Norwegian westcoast. It was used by the British portwine family Sandeman 1878-1912 and later served as a hotel for salmon fishing enthusiasts until 1964. It is located next to some of the best pools in the Surna river.

The farm is now under restoration. It has been badly maintained for more than 50 years, and some of the houses have to be torn down. We are not sure how much of the old fishing atmosphere can be restored, but we will do our best to reconstruct the farm and open it to the public.
